Filling the Jars to the Brim
A Pastoral Plan for the Archdiocese of Toronto, 2026 to 2033
Inspired by the Wedding Feast at Cana (John 2:1–11), Filling the Jars to the Brim invites the faithful of the Archdiocese of Toronto to embark on a seven-year journey of prayer, listening, discernment and pastoral renewal, deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ and our shared commitment to the life and mission of his Church.
At Cana, Mary recognized a need and directed the servants to her Son: “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). At Jesus’ instruction, they filled six stone jars with water, filling them to the brim. What the servants offered in faith and trust, Christ transformed through the abundance of his grace. This Gospel encounter reminds us that while we are called to respond generously to the needs before us, it is Christ who brings about the transformation.
Beginning with a Year of Discernment, the Pastoral Plan unfolds through six interconnected pastoral priorities, symbolized by the six stone jars of Cana. Together, they invite our parishes, families and communities to listen attentively to the Holy Spirit, recognize the God-given gifts and needs among us, and respond with renewed missionary zeal as we journey toward the Great Jubilee of 2033.
Cardinal Leo’s Welcome Video and Letter
With gratitude and great hope, His Eminence, Frank Cardinal Leo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto, invites the faithful of the archdiocese to embrace Filling the Jars to the Brim as a shared journey of faith, renewal and missionary discipleship.
In his Letter of Introduction, Cardinal Leo encourages clergy, consecrated persons and lay faithful to participate in this pastoral journey through prayer, listening and service, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the transforming power of Christ’s grace.
The Seven-Year Pastoral Journey
Filling the Jars to the Brim unfolds over seven years, from 2026 to 2033, as the Archdiocese of Toronto journeys together in prayer, discernment and pastoral renewal toward the Great Jubilee of 2033.
Our journey begins with a Year of Discernment (2026–2027), during which parishes are invited to listen attentively to the Holy Spirit, recognize the gifts and needs of their communities, and discern how the Lord is calling them to respond.
The following six years will each focus on one of the six interconnected pastoral priorities, symbolized by the six stone jars at Cana:
Although each year gives particular attention to one pastoral priority, all six remain interconnected, inviting our parishes and communities to grow together in faith, communion and missionary discipleship.
Pastoral Plan Prayer
As we journey together through Filling the Jars to the Brim, we entrust our efforts to the Lord, recognizing that it is his grace that brings forth the new wine.
Inspired by Mary’s words at Cana, “Do whatever he tells you.”, we invite all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Toronto to unite in prayer for the fruitfulness of our Pastoral Plan. May the Holy Spirit guide our discernment, deepen our communion and inspire us to respond generously to the needs of our parishes and communities.
We invite you to pray the Pastoral Plan Prayer and to share it with your family, parish and community.
